Midsize pickup trucks like the 2016 Toyota Tacoma might not sell here anywhere near as well as their full-size counterparts, but it's definitely a growing segment and one where the Toyota rules supreme. More than 180,000 Tacomas were sold last year, which is twice as many as its nearest rival managed. One reason for the Tacoma's enduring success is its almost rabid army of fans, who revel in the incredible durability of this remarkable truck. The legendary durability also results in it having the strongest resale values of any vehicle in the segment.

There's no doubt rival manufacturers are now keen to chip away at the continuing success of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, but the Japanese automaker's response has been swift and impressive. For the 2016 model year, the Tacoma gets a full redesign with an exterior that's now bolder and more aggressive and moves away from the smoother styling of its predecessor. With the new muscular-looking body that's more akin to a domestic full-size truck and its bold grill design, you're not likely to mistake the 2016 Tacoma for any of its rivals. The interior also benefits from a number of major improvements, which see it get some superbly comfortable seats, masses of the latest technology and lower levels of noise than ever before. Although the Tacoma has become more refined over time, it's definitely not lost any of the utilitarian ruggedness it's so renowned for.

There are five different trim levels to choose between with the 2016 Toyota Tacoma lineup, which are the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and the range-topping Limited. All models are available in both Access and Double Cab formats except the Limited, which is only available as a Double Cab.

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is available with two different engines, which are a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V-6. The four-cylinder is a 16-valve unit that develops 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque, while the V-6 puts an impressive 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque at your disposal. The 2.7-liter four-pot is the standard engine in SR and SR5 models, while the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited models come standard with the V-6. The V-6 is available as an option though with SR and SR5 models.

The 2.7-liter version of the SR is available with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the SR5 is only available with a six-speed auto with either engine option. The TRD models give you the choice of six-speed auto or manual transmissions, but the range-topping Limited trim only comes with the automatic.

Every version of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma is also available with a choice of rear-wheel drive or the manufacturer's excellent 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive.
