Toyota 2000GT, Lexus LFA, and now GR GT. The GR GT carries forward Toyota’s tradition of halo performance cars, blending motorsports engineering with road-going usability for drivers from Downtown Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley.

Rooted in the spirit of “Toyota’s Shikinen Sengu” – a philosophy of continuous renewal – GR GT is designed to stand out anywhere in L.A., whether it’s parked in an upscale DTLA garage or pulling up to your favorite spot in the Arts District.

The skills that defined icons like the Lexus LFA are being passed on to a new generation of engineers. GR GT preserves those core car-building fundamentals while embracing new hybrid performance technologies, creating a flagship worthy of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing.

GR GT Highlights

Three Core Principles That Define the GR GT Experience

GR GT is engineered around more than just straight-line power. It’s built to connect driver and machine – a car that responds intuitively to your inputs as you merge onto the 110, cruise the 10, or head for the canyons. Explore the three core pillars that shape its performance: balance, rigidity, and advanced aerodynamics.

Front-Engine, Rear-Drive Balance with a Low Center of Gravity

GR GT’s front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout delivers precise control and confidence, even at the limit. Engineers focused relentlessly on lowering the center of gravity, optimizing the placement of major components so that the driver and the car’s mass sit at nearly the same point of balance – ideal for spirited drives around Los Angeles and weekend track days.

A purpose-built chassis aims to bring driver and machine into a shared balance point, enhancing stability and feel on both tight city streets and open freeways.
Powertrain layout
A newly developed 4-liter V8 twin turbo engine paired with a single-motor hybrid system is targeted to deliver over 650 PS and over 850 Nm * of torque – performance you’ll want to experience firsthand at Toyota of Downtown L.A.

Rear transaxle
A new 8-speed automatic transmission and motor are integrated into a rear transaxle, helping optimize weight distribution and traction for confident acceleration onto any L.A. on-ramp.
Component packaging
Major components are packaged with precision to achieve a lower center of gravity, enhancing steering response as you weave through Downtown traffic or head for Mulholland.
Component packaging
Every major component in the GR GT is positioned with meticulous precision, allowing the car to sit exceptionally low while maintaining perfect structural balance. This engineering approach sharpens steering feedback and stability, giving you a level of control that feels intuitive whether you're navigating tight streets in Downtown Los Angeles or carving along the sweeping curves above the Hollywood Hills. The result is a driving experience that stays firmly connected to the road and to you.

Lightweight, Highly Rigid Structure for L.A. Roads and Beyond

GR GT targets Toyota’s first all-aluminum frame, reinforced with carbon in key areas such as the hood and roof. This focus on rigidity and weight reduction is designed to deliver sharp response and a planted feel, whether you’re navigating Sunset Boulevard or heading out of the city for a weekend road trip.

All-aluminum frame
A targeted all-aluminum body frame is designed to reduce weight while maintaining the stiffness needed for confident, high-performance driving.
Multi-material panel layout
Panels made from a mix of materials, including carbon reinforcements, are strategically positioned to boost strength where it matters most – a true performance-first approach that L.A. enthusiasts will appreciate.

Aerodynamics Designed from the Wind Backwards

Instead of styling the exterior first and tuning the aero afterward, GR GT starts with an ideal aerodynamic shape and builds everything around it. The goal: strong downforce, stable high-speed handling, and efficient cooling – ideal for track time and confident performance in the wide-open stretches just outside Los Angeles.

Aerodynamic design focus
Aerodynamic elements are crafted to help the GR GT stay composed and predictable, whether you’re accelerating onto the freeway or exploring its limits on a closed course.
Cooling performance focus
The pursuit of cooling performance supports consistent power delivery and endurance, helping the GR GT stay in its element during hot Southern California days and demanding drives.

“THE OVERTAKE” – The Story Behind GR GT

“Toyota’s Shikinen Sengu” Philosophy

The GR GT, GR GT3, and Lexus LFA Concept were created from the conviction of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Chairman Akio Toyoda, also known as Master Driver Morizo, that key car-making skills must never be lost. These models embody a modern interpretation of “Toyota’s Shikinen Sengu” – renewing craftsmanship by passing it to the next generation.

Inspired by the traditional Japanese ritual of Shikinen Sengu, in which a Shinto * shrine is periodically rebuilt, this philosophy looks to the future while respecting the past. Each rebuilding is an opportunity for artisans to hand down techniques, ensuring knowledge continues across generations.

The GR GT follows the path set by the Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA, serving as a new flagship sports car. At Toyota of Downtown L.A., we’re proud to connect Southern California drivers with a vehicle rooted in this level of craftsmanship and heritage.

* A Shinto shrine (神社 jinja) is a sacred place in Japan dedicated to the kami—spirits, natural forces, or ancestral beings worshipped in Shinto, Japan’s indigenous religion.

Heritage

A Lineage of Icons Leading to GR GT

The GR GT doesn’t arrive in isolation – it’s the latest chapter in a story that includes the legendary Toyota 2000GT and the V10-powered Lexus LFA. As your local Toyota performance destination near Downtown Los Angeles, we want our customers to understand the heritage that shapes this new flagship.

Toyota 2000GT
1967

Toyota 2000GT

The Toyota 2000GT introduced the world to a new vision of Japanese sports cars. Its ultra-low coupe body sat over an X-shaped backbone frame, paired with a straight-6 DOHC 2000 cc engine, independent double wishbone suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, and magnesium alloy wheels – all breakthroughs for a Japanese production vehicle.

With a top speed of 220 km/h, 0–400 m in 15.9 seconds, and 0–100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, it proved itself on the global stage. Before reaching showrooms, the 2000GT set multiple world and international records and established a performance legacy that GR GT now continues.

Lexus LFA
2010

Lexus LFA Concept

The Lexus LFA pushed performance and sound to new heights with a CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) monocoque and a 4.8-liter V10 (LR GUE) co-developed with Yamaha Motor. As of April 2011, it delivered one of the strongest outputs of any Japanese production car, producing 412 kW (560 PS)*/8700 rpm and 470 Nm (48.9 kgm)/6800 rpm.

Power was sent through a 6-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox in a rear transaxle layout, with the engine up front in a front-midship position and radiators mounted behind the rear wheels. The LFA remains a benchmark for driving feel – a standard GR GT now aims to honor in its own way.

* Special Edition: 419 kW (570 PS).

GR GT

As the new flagship sports car of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, the GR GT is developed with one clear idea: a racing machine built for the road. Its mission is to blend raw capability with a driver-first focus that keeps you engaged every time you head out across Los Angeles.

With a newly developed 4 L V8 twin turbo engine and single-motor hybrid system targeting over 650 PS and more than 850 Nm of torque, GR GT is engineered around three key elements: a low center of gravity, a lightweight, high-rigidity structure, and aerodynamics tuned for maximum effectiveness.
